Job Crisis Looms Over 12,000 Government Teachers in Haryana
A major crisis has emerged for nearly 12,000 teachers working in government schools across Haryana. The Directorate of School Education has issued a strict notice following compliance with Supreme Court orders, making it mandatory for teachers who have not yet cleared the Haryana Teacher Eligibility Test (HTET) to pass the examination. Failing to do so could result in either termination of their services or compulsory retirement.
This development has created a wave of anxiety among the affected teachers throughout the state. District Education Officers and District Elementary Education Officers have been instructed to inform all concerned teachers about the new directives. Administrative branches have been asked to strictly handle appointments and promotions in accordance with the apex court's directives.
September 1, 2025 Deadline Set for Exemption and Compliance
According to the education directorate's guidelines, conditions have been set based on the status as of September 1, 2025. Teachers who had more than five years remaining until their retirement on this date must pass the subject-specific HTET. Failure to pass may lead to termination of service or compulsory retirement.
On the other hand, teachers who had five years or less remaining for retirement on September 1, 2025, have been exempted from clearing HTET. They can continue service until the age of superannuation, though promotions will require clearing the relevant HTET subject. To help teachers clear the exam, the Board of School Education Haryana (BSEH) has been directed to conduct HTET twice a year.
Supreme Court Rulings and Legal Battles Ahead
The directorate stated that this action is based on the Supreme Court's order dated September 1, 2025, in Civil Appeal No. 1385-2025 and related matters. A review petition filed by Haryana teachers was also dismissed in May 2026, compelling the department to issue these strict implementation orders.
Following these developments, teacher associations are reportedly planning to approach the Supreme Court's division bench once again to seek relief. Consequently, the legal battle and debate over HTET mandatory rules for senior teachers are expected to continue in the near future.
