India's premier technical institution, IIT Kanpur, has launched its largest and most ambitious fundraising campaign to date, aiming to raise $1 billion (approximately Rs 8,300 crore) to shape the future of the nation. The mega campaign is designed to strengthen research infrastructure, provide global-level platforms for students and faculty, and accelerate deep-tech innovation.
The 'Greater Than Us' Campaign Launch
Titled 'Greater Than Us', the campaign was officially inaugurated by Defense Minister Rajnath Singh at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi. Notably, even before the formal announcement, global leaders and alumni had already pledged Rs 4,155 crore toward the initiative. The institute aims to fully realize the $1 billion target by March 2029.
During the launch, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh recalled the golden history of IITs and emphasized that building great institutions requires decades of dedication. He noted that early generations worked with limited resources driven by a strong will for nation-building, and today's responsibility is to elevate that legacy to new heights.
Alumnus Rahul Gautam's Generous Donation
As part of the mega-campaign, IIT Kanpur has partnered with distinguished alumnus and industrialist Rahul Gautam. He has pledged Rs 180 crore to establish the 'Gautam School of Innovation and Entrepreneurship' (G-SINE) at the institute's Noida campus. Set to be fully operational by July 2027, the school will offer a flagship MBA program integrating technology and entrepreneurship, focusing on AI, cybersecurity, biotechnology, drones, and advanced manufacturing.
Three Pillars of the Mega Plan
The entire initiative rests on three core pillars:
- Foundation: Building a robust research ecosystem, including a Rs 524 crore 'Central Research Facility' and a Rs 200 crore 'Super-Computing Hub'.
- Talent: Raising Rs 3,000 crore dedicated to student scholarships, fellowships, faculty recruitment, and startup training.
- Frontier: Exceeding its initial Rs 1,000 crore target by securing Rs 1,556 crore for cutting-edge projects in AI, quantum technology, semiconductors, and drug discovery.
