In an effort to combat slowing growth and fierce competition for audiences, streaming giant Netflix has executed its largest workforce reduction since 2022, laying off approximately 1,000 employees. According to a report by 'The Wall Street Journal', these layoffs will affect about 6 percent of the company's total workforce, with the majority of the cuts expected in product, technology, legal, and Human Resources (HR) teams. Netflix co-CEOs Ted Sarandos and Greg Peters informed employees of the decision via an email on Wednesday.
Pressure for Fast Growth and Declining Shares
This move comes at a time when Netflix is looking to expand beyond its traditional subscription business and faces immense pressure to demonstrate rapid growth. Speaking at a Bloomberg event in late September, Sarandos noted, 'We are not growing as fast as I want us to, and we are working on accelerating that pace.' The layoffs arrive as Netflix navigates a turbulent period for its stock. According to 'Business Insider', the company's shares have fallen by more than 30% over the past six months and over 40% over the past year.
Rising Competition and Higher Subscription Prices
Furthermore, the company faces intense competition in the crowded entertainment market, where various streaming platforms vie for viewer attention. To diversify revenue streams beyond subscriptions, Netflix has invested in advertising, live programming, and gaming. However, the company has also faced investor scrutiny regarding viewership engagement. Additionally, Netflix increased subscription prices in the US in March, raising its standard ad-free plan from $17.99 to $19.99 per month.
