Midnight Protest Outside Parliament Street Police Station
The national capital witnessed high political tension on Thursday night as members of the Congress-affiliated student wing, National Students Union of India (NSUI), staged a massive protest outside the Parliament Street police station. The demonstrators were demanding the immediate registration of an FIR against police personnel accused of assaulting and misbehaving with female activists during a previous demonstration. As the protest escalated, Delhi Police detained several activists, including NSUI National President Vinod Jakhar.
According to organizational sources, student leaders had been camping outside the station after local police authorities allegedly refused to register a formal complaint regarding the incidents that occurred on October 10. Despite attempts by senior officials to manage the crowd, the demonstrators refused to disperse without legal action being initiated against the accused personnel.
Serious Allegations of Assault and Intimidation
The core of the controversy stems from clashes during a student march earlier in the week. NSUI leaders have alleged that female members of the organization were subjected to severe physical manhandling by law enforcement personnel. Furthermore, allegations were raised that certain activists were dragged into secluded rooms and assaulted.
Speaking to the media prior to his detention, NSUI President Vinod Jakhar strongly criticized the local administration's apathy. He questioned why seeking justice and lawful registration of a complaint for female colleagues was being treated as a punishable offense by the authorities.
National Leadership Intervention and Student Testimonies
The protest gained significant momentum following a recent press conference led by Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, who presented several affected students and content creators before the media. The victims shared harrowing accounts of police misconduct, with some claiming permanent physical injuries resulting from aggressive police action during peaceful demonstrations.
Warning of Intensified Nationwide Agitation
Condemning the midnight detentions, senior NSUI office-bearers accused the police of acting under political pressure to shield errant personnel. The organization has warned that detaining student leaders will not suppress their voices and has threatened to expand their protests nationwide if formal legal proceedings are not initiated promptly.
