US Lawmakers Urge Marco Rubio to Raise Protest Issues During India Visit
A domestic political controversy in India has gained international attention as six US Democratic lawmakers wrote a formal letter to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. The legislators have asked Rubio to raise the issues of alleged excessive police force during student protests and human rights concerns with Indian authorities during his upcoming visit to the country.
Rubio is scheduled to travel to India next week, where he will meet External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar in Mumbai. The letter has added a layer of diplomatic friction, drawing sharp reactions from Indian official circles.
The signatories claimed that authorities in New Delhi and other parts of India cracked down on student demonstrations and supporters of the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP). They urged the US administration to advocate for freedom of peaceful assembly and independent investigations.
Prominent Signatories Include Pramila Jayapal and Ilhan Omar
The group of lawmakers who penned the letter includes prominent progressive figures in the US Congress. Indian-American Representative Pramila Jayapal and Representative Ilhan Omar spearheaded the initiative, alongside Jim McGovern, Rashida Tlaib, Eleanor Holmes Norton, and Jesús "Chuy" García.
The lawmakers also raised concerns regarding alleged surveillance of protesters by Indian diplomatic missions in Washington and other US cities. Furthermore, they touched upon the ongoing controversies surrounding voter list revisions and administrative actions back in India.
India Responds Strongly Against External Interference
The Indian government has dismissed the lawmakers' concerns as unwarranted and an infringement upon national sovereignty. Indian Ambassador to the US Vinay Mohan Kwatra strongly criticized the remarks, stating that interference in India's internal affairs is completely unacceptable.
New Delhi maintains that its democratic institutions are robust, independent, and fully capable of handling domestic matters without foreign preaching. As Marco Rubio prepares for his high-profile diplomatic visit, bilateral talks will likely navigate these sensitive talking points carefully.
