Prahaar Movie Review: Powerful Courtroom Drama Shines with Rajkummar Rao as Ujjwal Nikam, But Did It Miss the True Pain of 26/11?

The 26/11 Mumbai terrorist attacks have been witnessed on television, read about in news, and felt through numerous cinematic representations. But what happened in the courtroom after the attacks? Why did it take years to prove Ajmal Kasab guilty despite clear evidence and witnesses, and why was keeping a terrorist alive such a crucial necessity?

Rajkummar Rao's film 'Prahaar: The Ujjwal Nikam Story' attempts to answer these exact questions. This time, the focus is not on bullets, explosions, or terror, but on the rigorous legal battle fought within the confines of the Constitution to deliver justice to the nation.

Legal Intricacies and the Necessity of Capturing Kasab Alive

The film begins with Ujjwal Nikam's victory in the 1993 Bombay bomb blasts case, followed by the tragic 26/11 attacks that turn everything upside down. Rajkummar Rao plays Nikam as a fierce, stubborn public prosecutor who believes that justice must strictly operate within the boundaries of the Constitution.

One of the most compelling aspects of the movie is exploring why capturing Kasab alive was vital. Kasab was not just a terrorist, but living proof of cross-border terror networks. Although the film attempts to understand Kasab's human vulnerability—such as his confusion during Eid—it never justifies his heinous crimes. The testimony of a 10-year-old child actor brings out the real emotional weight of the tragedy.

Screenplay Flaws and Stellar Performances

While the film spends considerable time on Nikam's personal life and professional sacrifices, this subplot often clutters the narrative, drawing attention away from the core courtroom proceedings. The pacing fluctuates frequently, making it hard for viewers to maintain a steady emotional connection.

Sikandar Kher as Kasab's defense lawyer and Jaideep Ahlawat in a power-packed cameo as Pakistani lawyer Chaudhary Zulfiqar elevate the courtroom drama. The intellectual sparring between Rajkummar Rao and Jaideep Ahlawat is a major highlight. However, Rao's physical mannerisms and intense dialogue delivery occasionally feel a bit theatrical rather than organically lived-in.

Verdict

If you enjoy gripping courtroom dramas and real-life-inspired legal battles, 'Prahaar' offers plenty of engaging moments. However, if you are looking for a visceral cinematic experience that deeply captures the profound grief of the 26/11 victims, the film falls slightly short due to a scattered screenplay.
