Major Power Outage Paralyses Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka plunged into darkness on Saturday as a massive power grid failure triggered a countrywide blackout lasting more than three hours. The sudden disruption caught citizens and authorities off guard, severely impacting daily life across the island nation.

Water Supply and Internet Connectivity Disrupted

The cascading effect of the grid failure immediately hit the country's water distribution networks. Authorities urged citizens to conserve water as pumping stations ground to a halt due to the lack of electricity.

Telecommunication towers and internet service providers also faced significant disruptions. Mobile networks slowed down drastically, leaving millions unable to connect with families or carry out digital transactions during the peak afternoon hours.

Government Attributes Crisis to Hydropower Glitch

Addressing the media, Sri Lanka's Energy Minister Anura Karunatilaka explained that a sudden technical malfunction within the power system led to the island-wide outage. He noted that preliminary inspections point toward a hydroelectric plant located in the central mountainous region.

"A sudden technical glitch in our power infrastructure led to this nationwide disruption. Technical teams were immediately mobilized to restore the grid in a phased manner."— Anura Karunatilaka, Energy Minister, Sri Lanka

Experts and engineers worked around the clock to isolate the fault and safely bring power plants back online, prioritizing critical installations such as hospitals and emergency response units.
