Establishing a niche in the film industry is never a cakewalk. Aspiring actors often have to endure rigorous challenges, including remarks on their physical appearance, height, and skin tone. Acclaimed actress Sonali Kulkarni recently shared a poignant incident from her early career days that left a lasting scar on her mind.
Facing Harsh Remarks Over Dusky Complexion
During an interview, Sonali recounted that when she went for her very first film audition in Pune, the behavior of the people present there was deeply discouraging. A woman at the venue questioned her presence and, upon learning about the audition, made derogatory remarks about Sonali's skin tone.
Recalling the incident, Sonali shared that the woman sarcastically told her to look at herself in the mirror, adding that dusky girls do not look good on camera. Being very young at the time, hearing such harsh judgments shattered her confidence.
'Wanted to Vanish Into the Earth Like Sita'
Reflecting on those painful moments, the actress expressed how helpless she felt. She said, 'I felt so much embarrassment that I wanted to run away from that place. I felt like vanishing completely, just like Goddess Sita did into the earth.' Growing up, she often compared her wheatish complexion with her handsome brothers, constantly doubting her own personality and looks.
Overcoming Adversity to Build a Legacy
Despite facing such discouraging remarks and deep self-doubt at the very threshold of her acting journey, Sonali Kulkarni did not give up. She persevered through the hardships, honed her craft, and carved out a respected space for herself in the entertainment industry, proving that talent always triumphs over superficial standards.
