Video: This Amazing Flower Turns Transparent Like Glass in the Rain, Leaving Internet Stunned

Nature never fails to amaze us with its bizarre and wondrous creations. A mesmerizing video that has gone viral on social media features a unique woodland flower whose petals magically turn translucent and glass-like the moment rain touches them. Far from being a digital camera effect, this is a remarkable display of natural science.

The Science Behind the 'Skeleton Flower'

Native to the damp, wooded mountain regions of Japan, the plant Diphylleia grayi is famously known as the 'skeleton flower'. During dry weather, its delicate petals boast a pristine white color. However, when exposed to rain, these very petals become remarkably transparent, revealing the intricate network of veins underneath.

This striking transformation is purely optical and structural. The petals contain tiny microscopic air pockets that normally scatter light in multiple directions, causing the flower to appear white. When rainwater fills these spaces, the refractive index changes, allowing light to pass directly through the tissue without scattering. Consequently, the petals lose their opacity and turn see-through.

A Gradual Natural Phenomenon

Botanical studies indicate that this transformation does not happen instantly upon a single raindrop. It usually takes prolonged exposure to moisture, lasting up to a day, for the petals to turn fully transparent. Once the rain stops and the plant dries out completely, the air returns to the microscopic pockets, restoring the classic white appearance.

Growing up to 50 centimeters tall with broad, umbrella-like leaves, these perennial plants bloom during early summer in regions like Honshu and Hokkaido. When rendered transparent by water, their skeletal webbed structure becomes clearly visible, earning them their eerie yet fascinating moniker.
