Video: Man Digging Garden For Tiles Unearths Massive 1,000-Year-Old Viking Silver Hoard

What started as a simple DIY project to lay down new patio tiles turned into a historic discovery. A homeowner in Denmark was clearing grass, stones, and gravel in his backyard when his shovel struck something metallic with a dull thud.

Initially thinking it was just an old piece of iron or fence wire, he cleared away the dirt by hand, only to reveal silver jewelry, coins, and silver bars. Unbeknownst to him, he was standing on top of one of the largest Viking silver hoards ever discovered in Denmark.

The incredible subterranean stash dates back over 1,000 years and weighs a staggering 18.5 kilograms in total. Comprising around 700 priceless artifacts and fragments, the collection provides a fascinating glimpse into the Viking Age economy and culture.

Buried Inside an Ancient Clay Pot

According to archaeologists, the treasure was likely concealed sometime in the 10th century. The bulk of the silver was stored inside a ceramic vessel, containing roughly 320 items weighing about 6.4 kilograms, while the rest was scattered in the surrounding soil.

The entire collection features silver bars, arm rings, hacked silver pieces used as currency, and a rare miniature Thor's hammer. Whoever buried this massive fortune a millennium ago never returned to claim it, leaving behind a mystery that endures to this day.

Coins From the Arab World and Beyond

The significance of the discovery goes beyond its sheer weight. The hoard includes coins originating from the Arab world and Anglo-Saxon territories, highlighting how deeply connected Denmark was during the Viking Age through long-distance trade networks.

One of the silver bars even bears mysterious runic inscriptions, potentially indicating the owner's name or a maker's mark. Despite these clues, the true identity of the owner and the exact reason why the treasure was hidden remain lost to history.
