New Delhi/Ground Bureau — India's diplomatic and trade relations with Bangladesh have entered a critical phase following recent political upheavals. Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina remains in India, and while Bangladesh has recently hinted at reconciliation talks, New Delhi has responded with careful diplomatic caution. Security agencies are also on high alert following intelligence reports regarding the movement of wanted terrorists into the region.
Despite political friction, economic ties are expanding rapidly. Sweet potatoes from Gola, Jharkhand, are now being exported to Bangladesh, providing local farmers with a lucrative new market. Furthermore, for the first time since independence, a cargo vessel has departed from Dibrugarh for Bangladesh, marking a major revival of inland water transport and boosting bilateral trade.
