The Indian automobile market is witnessing a major shift as consumer preference moves rapidly from traditional petrol and diesel cars towards CNG vehicles. Rising fuel costs and the need for economical daily commuting have driven this massive surge in recent months. According to data, CNG cars' market share reached 25.28% by August 2026, while petrol cars dropped to 40.85%.
Leading the chart is the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga CNG, which sold 78,764 units in the first half of 2026, registering a 23% year-on-year growth. It offers a mileage of 26.11 km/kg. Following closely is the Maruti Suzuki Dzire CNG at the second spot with 75,339 units sold and a remarkable 69% growth, delivering an impressive 36.47 km/kg mileage. Maruti Wagon R CNG stands third with 54,267 units and a 34.05 km/kg mileage.
Tata Motors has also captured significant market share. Tata Punch CNG secured the fourth position as the highest-selling CNG SUV with 41,919 units sold and a 43% growth rate, boasting a mileage of 26.99 km/kg. Meanwhile, the Tata Nexon CNG secured the fifth spot with 41,355 units sold and a 38% growth, proving that safety and economy can go hand in hand.
