A Major Gift for Consumers Ahead of Festivals
As the festive season begins and households prepare traditional delicacies, the central government has announced a significant step to keep kitchen budgets under control. According to a notification issued by the Ministry of Finance, the basic customs duty on various edible oils has been substantially reduced. This move is expected to bring down retail prices in the market, providing much-needed relief to common citizens.
Experts believe that reducing import duties during a period when demand for cooking oil peaks will help stabilize domestic prices and curb inflationary pressures on the middle class.
Details of the Duty Reductions on Various Oils
Under the revised framework, the import duty on crude soybean oil and crude palm oil has been slashed from 10 percent to 5 percent. Meanwhile, the duty on refined soybean and refined palm oils has been reduced from 32.5 percent to 27.5 percent. These adjustments are designed to lower the landing cost for importers, ultimately benefiting end consumers in the retail market.
Furthermore, the customs duty on crude sunflower oil has been brought down to zero from the previous 10 percent. The duty on refined sunflower oil has also been lowered from 32.5 percent to 22.5 percent, ensuring ample supply and competitive pricing across retail stores.
Balancing Global Market Trends and Domestic Needs
Industry bodies noted that fluctuations in global prices and currency dynamics had earlier impacted import trends. By intervening proactively through fiscal measures, the government has ensured that domestic availability remains robust and prices do not spiral out of control during high-demand months.
