AC Sleeper Buses Turning into Fire Traps on Highways
Traveling by night coaches on national highways and modern expressways has become an increasingly perilous undertaking for common citizens. Recent mishaps have brutally exposed how long-distance luxury sleeper buses are abruptly turning into infernos while passengers are fast asleep. These catastrophic incidents not hard-hit only personal belongings but result in tragic loss of innocent lives, leaving families devastated.
Transport safety experts and analysts point out that these are not isolated accidents but part of a lethal, recurring pattern witnessed across various national corridors. Despite numerous alarming incidents on expressways, strict enforcement of safety regulations remains lax, putting everyday commuters at constant risk.
Rising Casualties and Stiff Warning Signs
Official data presented in Parliament recently laid bare the grim reality of vehicular safety in India. The central government acknowledged that over the past three years, at least 45 major fire incidents occurred in moving buses, claiming the lives of more than 64 passengers. These distressing figures prompted the National Human Rights Commission to issue notices to state chief secretaries, demanding stringent action against safety violations.
Whether it is multi-vehicle pile-ups in dense fog or sudden fires erupting without any collision, the aftermath has consistently been horrific. With flames engulfing vehicles within minutes, passengers are often left with virtually no time to escape, instilling profound fear among regular intercity travelers.
The Deadly Role of Local Retrofitting and Faulty Wiring
What triggers these sudden and devastating fires inside AC sleeper buses? The root cause often traces back to compromise on manufacturing standards. While original equipment manufacturer buses are heavily priced, transport operators frequently purchase basic chassis and customize them locally into sleeper coaches at a fraction of the cost.
These locally modified buses feature extensive electrical loads due to continuous usage of heavy air conditioning, lighting, and multiple charging points over 14 to 15 hours journeys. Instead of high-grade multiplex wiring, cheap and substandard cables are deployed, which easily overheat, melt, and spark major electrical blazes.
Cramped Layouts and Lack of Emergency Protocols
Beyond technical glitches, the internal architecture of customized sleeper coaches acts as a death trap. To maximize passenger capacity, operators pack berths closely together, leaving extremely narrow aisles where evacuation during an emergency becomes nearly impossible. Emergency exits are frequently locked or obstructed by extra seats.

Furthermore, highly flammable foam and fabrics are routinely used in the interiors, accelerating the spread of fire. Basic survival gear like fire extinguishers and safety hammers to break emergency glass are often missing, leaving trapped passengers helpless against rapidly spreading flames.
