Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay has officially launched the much-anticipated 'Thaimaman Thanga Mothiram' (Maternal Uncle's Gold Ring) scheme, fulfilling a major electoral promise made to the women of the state. The initiative is aimed at celebrating the birth of newborns in government healthcare facilities by presenting them with a token of love from the state, symbolically acting as their maternal uncle.
Grand Launch at Madurai Government Rajaji Hospital
Arriving in Madurai via a special flight, Chief Minister Vijay visited the Government Rajaji Hospital to kickstart the statewide rollout. During the launch event, he personally handed over 1-gram 22-karat gold rings to 25 newborns. The atmosphere was filled with warmth as the Chief Minister held several infants in his arms and, upon the mothers' requests, whispered names into the babies' ears for their formal naming ceremonies.
A Promise Rooted in Cultural Tradition
During his election campaign, Vijay had repeatedly emphasized the cultural practice in Tamil Nadu where a maternal uncle gifts a newborn child. Posing as the brother of the state's women, he had promised that his administration would institutionalize this gesture for every child born in a government hospital. To ensure absolute transparency, the government procured 1.28 lakh gold rings for the first phase, with each ring engraved with a unique serial number.
Massive Budget and Operational Framework
The state government has allocated an annual budget of 755.83 crore rupees for this welfare initiative. Across Tamil Nadu, 107 special distribution centers have been established, with a target to distribute gold rings to at least 100 infants per center daily. Mothers who are permanent residents of the state, registered under the Pregnancy and Infant Cohort Monitoring and Evaluation (PICME) system, and holding a Reproductive and Child Health (RCH) ID are eligible to receive the benefit.
