Delhi-Ambala Railway Track Expansion: Third and Fourth Lines to Boost Train Speed with Rs 5983 Crore

Major Upgrade on Delhi-Ambala Railway Route

In a significant move to tackle heavy traffic congestion and improve the average speed of trains, Indian Railways has officially initiated the process to lay third and fourth lines on the crucial Delhi-Ambala railway corridor. Spanning across 194 kilometers, this mega infrastructure project is estimated to cost around Rs 5983 crores and aims to completely transform travel dynamics in northern India.

Railway data indicates that the current traffic volume on this route is nearly 66 percent beyond its actual operational capacity. Consequently, premium trains such as Rajdhani, Shatabdi, and Vande Bharat frequently experience delays as they wait at outer signals or smaller stations to clear the path for freight trains.

Addressing Overcrowding and Future Demands

The Delhi-Ambala section serves as a vital strategic and commercial lifeline connecting the national capital to northern states including Punjab, Haryana, and Jammu & Kashmir. With daily passenger train counts exceeding 150 alongside numerous freight carriages, the existing dual tracks are continuously overburdened.

With upcoming connectivity extensions all the way to Srinagar in the Kashmir valley, traffic density on this corridor is bound to escalate further. To preempt future bottlenecks, railway authorities fast-tracked the detailed project report, securing approval earlier this year to construct two additional tracks alongside the existing ones.

Project Phasing and Financial Outlay

Out of the total financial estimate of Rs 5983 crores, the initial phase focuses heavily on the Subzi Mandi to Ambala Cantt stretch, for which a tender worth Rs 3612 crores has been floated. This phase encompasses civil engineering, track laying, signal upgrades, telecommunication improvements, and overhead equipment installations.

Furthermore, the project includes constructing 79 rail under-bridges and two major rail over-bridges to eliminate level crossing delays. Railways have set a strict four-year completion window to ensure timely execution.
