Beware! Ignoring minor stomach pain can be dangerous, gallbladder stones lead to major surgery

Health experts believe that minor changes and pain in the body are often warnings of a major underlying disease. People frequently ignore mild stomach aches or digestive issues, considering them normal, but such negligence can later turn into a serious medical emergency. Recently, a similar case came to light where a woman paid a heavy price for ignoring her health issues. Due to a lack of timely treatment, her condition deteriorated to the extent that doctors had to perform surgery to remove 49 stones from her body.

Stomach pain becomes a warning sign as tests reveal shocking truth

According to the reports, a 54-year-old woman had been aware of having gallstones for a long time. Despite this, she did not take the condition seriously and avoided seeking any medical treatment. After some time, she suddenly started experiencing severe and unbearable pain in the lower right part of her abdomen. When the pain became unbearable, her family admitted her to Phu Tho Provincial General Hospital. Recognizing the seriousness of her condition, the hospital doctors immediately ordered several essential medical tests and ultrasounds.

When the test reports arrived, the medical team was astonished. The woman had developed cholecystitis, an inflammation of the gallbladder caused by gallstones. Due to the excessive accumulation of stones and infection, her condition had become quite sensitive, prompting doctors to decide on immediate surgery. The medical team performed a laparoscopic cholecystectomy using modern techniques.

49 stones extracted from the patient's body after surgery

When the surgical procedure was completed, a total of 49 stones were recovered from inside the woman's gallbladder. Surprisingly, all of these stones ranged from 4 to 8 millimeters in size. The accumulation of such a large number of stones was the sole reason behind the excruciating abdominal pain the patient was enduring. Had she not been admitted to the hospital in time, the infection could have spread to surrounding organs and proved fatal.

However, thanks to modern medical technology, this complex surgery was successfully completed. Because it was a laparoscopic procedure, the patient did not have to undergo major incisions. According to doctors, performing surgery with this modern technique results in less pain for patients and much faster physical recovery.

Rapid recovery of the patient followed by hospital discharge

Following the successful surgery, a significant improvement was observed in the woman's health. The hospital's doctors and nursing staff provided excellent care, yielding a positive outcome: by the very second day post-operation, the woman began walking around normally. Moreover, she was able to resume a normal diet as advised by her doctors. With her condition fully under control, the hospital administration successfully discharged her on the fifth day.

Medical professionals state that with timely and proper treatment, such complications can be easily avoided. This case has once again proven that any internal bodily pain should never be taken lightly. Consulting a doctor in a timely manner is always the wise choice.

Is surgery necessary for every case of gallstones?

People often wonder whether undergoing surgery is the only option when gallstones are detected. Health experts clearly state that surgery is not required in every single case of gallstones. Individuals who have gallstones but do not experience any symptoms or discomfort do not need immediate operations. In such cases, doctors choose to monitor the patient regularly and advise periodic check-ups.

On the other hand, when gallstones lead to severe complications such as acute cholecystitis, bile duct obstruction, cholangitis, or gallstone-induced acute pancreatitis, choosing an appropriate treatment method—often surgery—becomes essential to evaluate and treat the patient safely.

Why laparoscopic surgery is considered a better option

Compared to traditional open surgery, laparoscopic surgery is considered the safest and most modern approach today. This method eliminates the need for large incisions on the body, completing the operation through small punctures instead. This offers major benefits, including less blood loss, significantly reduced pain, and a minimal risk of infection.

"Gallbladder stone conditions should never be ignored. If symptoms are identified in time and appropriate steps are taken upon a doctor's advice, major health complications can be easily avoided." — Medical Expert, Surgical Department
