The mysterious suicide case of IIT Bombay B.Tech student Sahil Wakode has taken new turns as the Mumbai Police Crime Branch accelerates its investigation. Authorities have recorded statements from more than 20 individuals, including fellow students, academic staff, and administration personnel, in an effort to piece together the events leading up to the tragic incident.
Investigators are meticulously examining the sequence of events from September 18. The primary focus remains on understanding what transpired during the crucial 47-minute window between the time Sahil left the examination hall at approximately 12:38 PM and when he returned to his hostel room around 1:25 PM. CCTV footage from across the campus is being thoroughly scanned to trace his movements.
Technical Hurdles in Accessing Digital Evidence
Retrieving digital footprints has emerged as a significant challenge for the investigating team. Police sources revealed that accessing data from Sahil's modern iPhone has proven difficult due to advanced security features. Forensic experts are working tirelessly to bypass these restrictions to extract call logs, messages, and application data that could shed light on his final communications.
Additionally, authorities have seized his laptop and dispatched it to a forensic laboratory for detailed analysis. Investigators hope that combining the digital evidence from both devices with eyewitness testimonies will provide a clear picture of the mental state and external pressures the student might have been facing.
Family Allegations and Political Intervention
The grieving family has strongly demanded accountability, alleging that Sahil faced caste-based discrimination within the premier institute. Union Minister Ramदास Athawale visited the IIT Bombay campus to review the situation and urged authorities to conduct a thorough and impartial inquiry to ensure justice for the bereaved family.
