India's Cervavac Vaccine Gets WHO Approval: A Major Milestone in Cervical Cancer Prevention

In a landmark development for global public health, the World Health Organization (WHO) has granted pre-qualification approval to India's indigenous cervical cancer vaccine, Cervavac. This crucial endorsement establishes that the vaccine meets international standards of safety, efficacy, and manufacturing quality. Developed by the Serum Institute of India (SII), the vaccine is designed to combat the human papillomavirus (HPV), which is primarily responsible for cervical cancer among women.

Cervical cancer remains one of the most pressing health challenges for women, particularly in developing nations where it ranks second only to breast cancer. The newly approved vaccine targets four high-risk HPV strains—16, 18, 6, and 11. While strains 16 and 18 are directly linked to cancerous growths, strains 6 and 11 are commonly associated with genital warts. Medical experts emphasize that administering this vaccine to young girls and women can drastically reduce the risk of developing the disease.

With WHO's green light, international health organizations and UNICEF can now procure the vaccine for global immunization programs. This opens international doors for Indian-made affordable vaccines, expanding life-saving healthcare access to women across multiple countries. Meanwhile, India continues its domestic rollout under a nationwide HPV immunization drive, having already administered over 8 million doses to young girls.
