India has delivered a sharp diplomatic rebuttal to US lawmaker Pramila Jayapal over her comments regarding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in the country. Indian Ambassador to the US, Vinay Mohan Kwatra, asserted firmly that any external interference in India's internal political and electoral processes is completely unacceptable and unwarranted.
Democratic Representative Pramila Jayapal, representing Washington state, had earlier raised concerns over the alleged mass removal of names from voter lists in India during the revision process. Drawing comparisons with administrative challenges in Western democracies, her remarks sparked a major debate across political and digital platforms regarding sovereignty and democratic norms.
Ambassador Vinay Mohan Kwatra's Firm Stance
Responding directly to the US congresswoman via social media, Ambassador Kwatra emphasized that India is a vibrant democracy equipped with robust, independent constitutional institutions and a stellar legacy of conducting free and fair elections. He maintained that New Delhi remains open to constructive dialogue to clear up any misconceptions but will not tolerate interference in its domestic affairs.
The Objective Behind the SIR Process
Meanwhile, the Election Commission of India has reiterated that the SIR process is designed exclusively to clean up electoral rolls by weeding out duplicate entries, deceased voters, and ineligible names. The poll body has repeatedly assured that adequate grievance redressal mechanisms, including Form-6, remain available for any genuine voter whose name might have been inadvertently omitted.
