IndiGo Air Fare Hike: Domestic and International Flight Tickets to Cost More Due to ATF Price Surge

Major Setback for Air Travelers Ahead of Festival Season

Air travel is set to become more expensive as IndiGo, India's largest airline, has announced a significant hike in fuel surcharges for both domestic and international routes. Amid continuous global fluctuations in Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) prices, passengers planning to travel during the upcoming Diwali and festive season will now have to shell out extra money for their flight tickets.

Jet fuel prices have witnessed a sharp upward trend over the past few months, driven largely by geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and rising crude oil costs globally. To counter the soaring operational expenses, airlines are forced to pass on a portion of the burden to consumers through revised fuel component charges.

Revised Fuel Surcharge for Domestic Routes

Under the new structure, IndiGo has increased the Fuel Surcharge (FSC) based on flight distance. Passengers traveling on domestic routes will see an increase ranging from ₹100 to ₹1,300 per sector. For distances between 1000 KM and 1500 KM, the surcharge is now ₹900, while routes spanning 1501 KM to 2000 KM will attract a fee of ₹1,150. For distances exceeding 2000 KM, the surcharge has been capped at ₹1,300.

Significant Hike on International Flights

International travelers face an even steeper increase, with fuel surcharges on overseas routes going up by as much as ₹10,000. With jet fuel constituting nearly half of an airline's total operational cost, international carriers are heavily impacted by global energy market volatility.

Implementation and Future Outlook

The revised charges will come into effect for all new bookings made starting Tuesday midnight. Existing bookings made prior to the announcement remain unaffected. Industry experts advise passengers to book their festive travel tickets early to avoid soaring last-minute fares.
