Jharkhand PDS Dealers Face Financial Crunch Over Pending Commission
The public distribution system (PDS) is the backbone of food security for millions of underprivileged families across India. In Jharkhand, thousands of ration dealers act as the primary link between the government and citizens. However, a major administrative and financial dispute has put these dealers in a tight spot. Jharkhand's Food, Public Distribution and Consumer Affairs Minister, Dr. Irfan Ansari, has strongly criticized the central government, accusing it of apathy regarding the pending commission payments of the state's PDS dealers.
Minister Irfan Ansari released an official statement highlighting that the ongoing delay in releasing funds from the central authorities is forcing local dealers to suffer unnecessarily. He reiterated that the state administration under Chief Minister Hemant Soren is fully committed to resolving the grievances of these shopkeepers and is actively pursuing the matter with the central ministries to ensure a speedy resolution.
Two Financial Years of Pending Payments Under the Scanner
The core issue revolves around the unpaid commission for nearly seven months spanning across the financial years 2024-25 and 2025-26. According to the state food department, while a part of the central share has been disbursed in phases, a significant portion remains stuck due to pending approvals and bureaucratic hurdles at the national level.
"Our dealers are a crucial part of this entire PDS system; they have families and responsibilities too. Therefore, paying their commission on time is our responsibility, and the government is completely serious and sensitive about this matter." — Dr. Irfan Ansari, Food and Supply Minister, Jharkhand
The minister emphasized that running a fair price shop involves operational costs such as transportation, shop rent, and electricity. When commissions are delayed for months, it becomes nearly impossible for small-scale dealers to sustain their livelihood, ultimately threatening the smooth delivery of subsidized rations to the public.
Conclusion and Way Forward for Jharkhand Ration Dealers
As the political slugfest and administrative correspondence between Ranchi and New Delhi continue, thousands of PDS dealers in Jharkhand remain hopeful for a swift resolution. Minister Irfan Ansari has assured that the state government will keep pushing for the remaining funds until every single dealer receives their due share without unnecessary harassment.
