A major political controversy erupted in Gujarat after an FIR was registered against Congress MLA Jignesh Mevani and seven others in connection with a high-voltage drama at a police station in Gandhinagar. The case stems from an incident during the local civic body election campaign, where the legislator and his supporters allegedly intervened in a police inquiry and created a hostile environment inside the premises.
The Sequence of Events at the Police Station
The incident reportedly took place on October 8, when Yunus Parmar, a Congress candidate from Ward No. 4 of the Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation, was summoned to the Pethapur police station following a complaint that he and his associates had threatened a BJP campaigner and warned him against entering the area.
According to the complaint filed by Police Inspector A.M. Desai, while he was officially recording Parmar's statement, MLA Jignesh Mevani along with an unlawful assembly of supporters barged into the writer's room. The accused allegedly prevented the officer from discharging his legal duties, used abusive language, and forcefully tried to disrupt the legal procedure.
Allegations of Attempted Communal Tension and Violation of Orders
The police complaint further states that the crowd sat outside the station shouting slogans referencing specific communities, with the alleged intent of inciting public sentiment against law enforcement and disturbing communal harmony. It is also alleged that the accused recorded footage of the incident and circulated it on social media to promote enmity.
The case was officially registered on the day of voting for the Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation elections. Charges have been slapped under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Gujarat Police Act, including unlawful assembly, rioting, obstructing a public servant, and criminal intimidation. Further investigations into the matter are currently underway.
