In Indian society, the elderly have always been regarded as guiding lights and pillars of the family. However, in the later stages of life, many face neglect and immense hardship due to a lack of awareness regarding their legal rights. Recognizing this reality, the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) has initiated a comprehensive, grassroots-level legal awareness campaign across various districts. The core objective of this mission is to reach senior citizens residing in remote villages, inform them about their legal rights, and ensure they receive justice so they can lead a self-reliant and secure life.
Under the guidance of senior judiciary officials and district authorities, special legal aid clinics and awareness camps are being organized in rural interiors. Team members are visiting door-to-door to apprise the elderly of the special schemes formulated for senior citizens by the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA). These community programs focus on educating people about the legal provisions enacted for the safety and dignity of the elderly.
Objectives of the NALSA Senior Citizens Scheme
Launched in 2016, the NALSA (Legal Services to Senior Citizens) Scheme has proven to be a milestone in this direction. The scheme ensures free legal aid and easy availability of lawyers at national, state, district, and tehsil levels. If a senior citizen faces mistreatment or eviction from property by family members, provisions are in place to provide prompt legal assistance.
Experts emphasize that securing basic rights for the elderly is a moral responsibility of every segment of society. Through these mechanisms, senior citizens are made aware of various welfare schemes operated by central and state governments, such as old age pensions, specialized healthcare facilities, and travel concessions. Additionally, information regarding senior citizen tribunals and appellate tribunals is provided so that the elderly do not have to endure protracted court battles.

Role of Para-Legal Volunteers and Ground-Level Relief
The backbone of this campaign comprises Para-Legal Volunteers (PLVs) who directly reach out to the needy within villages. These volunteers assist senior citizens, helpless women, and widows in restarting their halted pensions. Furthermore, they help villagers overcome bureaucratic hurdles by assisting in making Aadhaar cards, rectifying documents, and obtaining residence or age certificates.
The campaign's scope has been aggressively expanded to cover remote and tribal blocks, ensuring that even the most marginalized senior citizens receive justice and welfare support.
