What was meant to be a joyous celebration of a granddaughter's birthday turned into a harrowing nightmare for several families in Mumbai. A major elevator disaster was averted, but 14 people, including four young children, had to endure nearly three hours of sheer terror trapped inside a malfunctioning lift. The incident has once again brought the critical issue of residential elevator safety and maintenance into the spotlight.
Elevator Plummets After Birthday Party
According to reports, the incident took place at the 'Mass Metropolis' building located in Nehru Nagar. A family had gathered to celebrate a birthday party, and as the festivities concluded around 12:40 AM, a group of 14 people boarded the elevator to head down. Everything seemed normal initially, but as the lift reached near the sixth floor, it suffered a massive jolt and plunged rapidly down the shaft, finally coming to a halt just above the ground floor.
The sudden drop triggered immediate panic inside the enclosed cabin. With children crying, adults tumbling over one another, and darkness engulfing the space, oxygen levels began to drop, making it difficult for the trapped occupants to breathe normally.
A Tense 3-Hour Rescue Operation
Trapped occupants rang the emergency alarm, drawing the attention of other residents who rushed to help. However, all initial manual attempts to pry open the doors failed. Family members alleged that for nearly 45 minutes, no timely assistance was provided by the building watchman or management, prompting them to contact emergency services.
Upon receiving the alert, Nehru Nagar police and local fire department teams rushed to the spot. A complex rescue operation was launched. Using metal cutters and hydraulic jacks, firefighters meticulously sliced through parts of the elevator shaft. After three grueling hours, all 14 individuals were successfully rescued. Though physically safe, many emerged visibly shaken and traumatized by the ordeal.
Police Investigation and Safety Concerns
In the wake of the incident, local authorities have launched a comprehensive investigation to determine the exact cause of the mechanical failure. Investigators are examining whether the elevator was overloaded, reviewing its maintenance contracts, and assessing the overall safety audit records of the building. Affected families are reportedly planning to take legal action against the maintenance agency for negligence.
