Mumbai Traders Express Anger Over Ongoing Protests Affecting Festive Business

Amid peak festive shopping, traders in Mumbai have voiced their strong resentment against ongoing protests in the city's key commercial areas and markets. Business owners state that continuous demonstrations are heavily impacting customer footfall, resulting in significant financial losses during a crucial period of the year.

Impact on Festive Business and Trade

Traders have appealed to protesters to choose designated venues for raising their voices, ensuring that daily life and commercial activities are not disrupted. Prominent trader Viren Shah noted that while protesting is a fundamental right of every citizen, disrupting normal city life in its name is unacceptable. He highlighted that markets witness a massive influx of shoppers during festivals, and protests in the vicinity deter people from visiting retail stores.

According to Shah, the shift towards online shopping has already accelerated post-pandemic. If chaotic conditions persist in physical markets, customers will increasingly prefer digital platforms over local shops, multiplying the struggles of small and large merchants alike.

Shopper Concerns and Political Reactions

Customers visiting the markets have also echoed similar worries, stating that prolonged disruptions cause difficulties for both buyers and sellers. Traders argue that since the matter has reached the Supreme Court, legal processes should be respected, and demonstrations should ideally be paused to restore normalcy.

On the other hand, protesters and Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Awadhesh Shukla claimed that the protesting merchants are aligned with the ruling party and are speaking up at the behest of the BJP. Nonetheless, smooth operations in markets during the festive season remain vital for both traders and consumers.
