'I Am Afraid, That's Why I'm Still Alive'
Emily (name changed), who works at a Pattaya bar and is affectionately called 'Mum' by younger peers, has spent over two decades in the city. Despite her long tenure, she remains extremely cautious with every single new customer. In her interview with AFP, she revealed that her constant vigilance and fear are precisely what have kept her safe all these years.
This anxiety is heightened by shocking incidents in the city, such as a recent case where a woman's body was found inside a suitcase near railway tracks, leading to the arrest of an Australian national. Emily noted that such brutal events do not surprise her anymore, having witnessed numerous safety hazards over the years, yet women from rural areas continue to arrive in search of livelihood.

Emily pointed out that many young women arrive in Pattaya after being lured by social media videos depicting glamorous lifestyles and easy money. However, the reality on the ground is starkly different. Understanding the nature of the work, handling diverse client behaviors, and managing personal safety takes immense resilience and time, contrary to what is portrayed online.
Debt, Desperation, and Survival
The report also highlights the story of 37-year-old Ann, who moved to Pattaya from western Thailand a decade ago after previously working as a hairdresser. Overwhelmed by personal debts and hardships, she turned to this industry out of sheer economic necessity. Although sex work remains officially illegal in Thailand, it continues to serve as an economic pillar for women with limited livelihood options.
