Congress MP and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, has written a formal letter to President Droupadi Murmu, raising strong objections to BJP leader Dushyant Gautam's appointment as the Governor of Sikkim. Serious Concerns Raised in the Letter to the President
Sharing the letter sent to the President on the social media platform 'X', Rahul Gandhi stated that 19-year-old Ankita Bhandari refused to compromise her dignity for a VIP, which ultimately led to her brutal murder. He pointed out that even after four years, slow probe progress by investigative agencies leaves the identity of that VIP shrouded in mystery. With Ankita's family and several citizens believing that Dushyant Gautam is linked to the case, Gandhi expressed deep shock over his elevation to a constitutional gubernatorial post.
Rahul argued that holding the office of Governor would grant Dushyant Gautam immunity from criminal proceedings. He claimed that advising such an appointment demonstrates a disregard for women's safety. He appealed to the President to advise the government to reconsider the appointment so that the hopes of justice for Ankita's parents are not shattered. Notably, following Gautam's appointment, Ankita's parents staged a protest at India Gate in New Delhi, where Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi had joined to show solidarity.
CM Pushkar Singh Dhami Counterattacks the Opposition
Meanwhile, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami accused the Congress party of playing dirty politics over the sensitive issue. Addressing the media, the Chief Minister stated that the state government's deepest sympathies have always been with the grieving family. He highlighted that the state administration readily accepted the demand for a thorough probe and ensured strict legal representation in the High Court, resulting in the rejection of bail pleas for the convicts.
CM Dhami asserted that the government has handled the case with utmost seriousness, putting all culprits behind bars. Targeting the opposition, he stated that Congress is merely attempting to milk a tragic incident for political mileage, which is highly condemnable.
