Political Tensions Rise Over Seat-Sharing in Uttar Pradesh
The political landscape in Uttar Pradesh is witnessing heightened friction within the 'INDIA' alliance regarding upcoming electoral strategies and seat distribution. While the opposition bloc was formed to put up a united fight, statements from leaders of both the Samajwadi Party (SP) and the Congress frequently bring underlying tensions to the surface. Adding fuel to the fire, Samajwadi Party MP from Pratapgarh, Shivpal Singh Patel, has launched a sharp verbal attack on the Congress, making bold claims about their political standing in the state.
MP Patel claimed that during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the Congress party was in such a weakened state in Uttar Pradesh that without the robust backing of the Samajwadi Party, they would not have won a single seat. He went as far as suggesting that even on their traditional stronghold family seats, top Congress leaders were hesitant to enter the electoral fray and were looking for safer exits.
The Inside Story of Rae Bareli Candidacy
Making a specific revelation about senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, the SP MP stated that Gandhi was initially reluctant to contest from the Rae Bareli constituency and was prepared to leave the seat. According to Patel, it was the strong political intervention and firm stance of SP Chief Akhilesh Yadav that compelled Gandhi to reconsider.
"If there had not been an alliance with the Samajwadi Party, Congress wouldn't have won even a single seat in UP. Their top leader Rahul Gandhi was even ready to leave the seat and move away from Amethi out of fear. Our national president Akhilesh Yadav assured him and warned that if he didn't contest, the SP would field its own candidate, and only then did Gandhi agree to fight." — Shivpal Singh Patel, Samajwadi Party MP
Patel emphasized that the victory of Rahul Gandhi in Rae Bareli was largely made possible by the dedicated groundwork, cadre support, and vote bank of the Samajwadi Party, which worked tirelessly on the ground to ensure an alliance victory.
SP Remains the 'Big Brother' in Uttar Pradesh
Reiterating the dominance of the Samajwadi Party in state politics, Patel pointed out the numerical strength of the party in both Parliament and the state assembly. With 37 Lok Sabha MPs and 101 MLAs, the SP is undeniably the 'big brother' of the alliance in Uttar Pradesh, he asserted.
He noted that while the SP secured 37 seats independently, the Congress was restricted to just 6 seats with the help of the SP. Given that the Congress has only 2 legislators in the 403-member UP assembly, their demand for more than 50 seats in future seat-sharing talks is entirely impractical and unjustified.
Conclusion and Future Outlook
Concluding his remarks, the SP MP warned that if the Congress party attempts to contest future elections entirely on its own in Uttar Pradesh, it will be reduced to zero, as the public now views them purely through a realistic electoral lens. As political equations continue to evolve, statements like these highlight the delicate balance required to maintain coalition dharma in India's most populous and politically crucial state.
