The Voter List Controversy in Delhi Slums
The issue of missing names from electoral rolls in the national capital has escalated into a major political flashpoint. Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, recently visited the Bela Estate slum area located along the Yamuna riverbanks to interact with residents whose names were allegedly removed from the voter list.
Sharing a video of his visit on social media platforms, Rahul Gandhi claimed that out of 728 residents living in the area who had participated in previous elections, only a single name remained on the updated electoral roll. He termed this development a severe blow to the democratic rights of marginalized citizens.
Local residents expressed their distress, stating that despite living in the area for decades and voting in recent elections, their sudden exclusion from the voter lists has left them stripped of their fundamental right to vote.
Direct Administrative Intervention
During his visit, Rahul Gandhi placed a phone call directly to the local Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) from the site. He questioned the logic behind stripping citizens of their voting rights based on their residential status, citing the Chief Election Commissioner's previous statements regarding provisions for homeless individuals under 'House Number 0'.
The conversation drew significant attention as local administrative officials struggled to provide immediate and satisfactory explanations for the mass deletion of names. The opposition leader warned that such administrative negligence and targeted exclusions would face strong opposition.
The Congress party maintains that these actions stem from a deliberate design to disenfranchise poor and vulnerable communities, thereby manipulating electoral outcomes in future polls.
Congress Working Committee Strategy
Amidst mounting tensions, the Congress Working Committee (CWC) convened a high-level meeting in New Delhi to strategize against alleged electoral malpractices. The party resolved to take the campaign beyond parliament and onto the streets, organizing grassroots agitations across the country.

The poll panel reiterated that eligible citizens whose names were omitted could apply for inclusion under Section 19 of the Representation of the People Act, 1950, within the designated registration window.
