Rajasthan Local Body Elections: BJP and Congress Battle for Mayoral Seats
The political landscape in Rajasthan has heated up following the declaration of results for mayoral, chairman, and president posts in various urban local bodies. The recent elections saw a fierce contest between the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the opposition Congress, with BJP securing victories in Ajmer, Alwar, Udaipur, and Pali, while Congress managed to win the Bikaner Municipal Corporation.
These local body elections are seen as a crucial test of grassroots popularity and administrative influence. Beyond mere numbers, the results highlighted the importance of strategic floor management, alliance-building, and managing intra-party rebellions in closely contested civic boards where absolute majorities were initially lacking.
Ajmer and Alwar: The Battle of Floor Management and Independents
The Ajmer Municipal Corporation election proved to be the most dramatic contest. Congress emerged as the single largest party by winning 37 seats, falling short of the majority mark, while BJP secured 32 seats. However, through aggressive floor management, support from independent candidates, and cross-party alignments, BJP managed to gather 43 votes. BJP candidate Anamika Sharma defeated Congress candidate Kiran Garhwal by a margin of 6 votes.
Similarly, Alwar witnessed a hung house with BJP winning 28 seats and Congress securing 23. Thirteen independent candidates held the balance of power. Ultimately, these independents backed the BJP, helping BJP candidate Sumanlata Agarwal secure the mayoral post with 42 votes against Congress candidate Kamesh Sharma's 23 votes.
Udaipur and Bikaner: Clear Mandates and Divergent Fortunes
Unlike the hung boards of Ajmer and Alwar, Udaipur Municipal Corporation delivered a decisive mandate. Out of 80 wards, the BJP won 53 seats, securing a comfortable absolute majority. BJP candidate Paras Singhvi registered an easy victory for the Udaipur mayoral post.
Meanwhile, the Congress party found success in the Bikaner Municipal Corporation, crossing the majority mark by winning 42 out of 80 seats. Congress candidate Anil Kalla secured 50 votes to become the new mayor of Bikaner. Additionally, BJP candidates won unopposed in Bharatpur and Bhilwara, further strengthening the party's position across the state.
