A shocking incident has shaken the city of Thane in Maharashtra, where local Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) leader and Manpada sub-division chief Pradeep Purnekar was shot dead by unidentified assailants. The high-profile attack has sent shockwaves through local political circles and ordinary citizens alike. Following the incident, heavy tension has gripped the region, prompting the police to enforce a high alert and step up security measures. Authorities have launched extensive raids and detained a few suspects for questioning to crack the case.
The Incident at Manpada Under Kapoorbawdi Police Jurisdiction
According to reports, the targeted shooting took place around 9 PM on Tuesday. Pradeep Purnekar's office is situated in the Manpada and Ganesh Nagar area under the jurisdiction of the Kapoorbawdi police station in Thane. He was inside his office, discussing local socio-political issues, when the armed assailants arrived. Eyewitnesses and police sources noted that the attackers wore helmets and masks to conceal their identities. Without warning, they opened indiscriminate fire on Purnekar, catching everyone present completely off guard.
Purnekar sustained two direct bullet injuries and collapsed on the spot. The attackers managed to flee immediately after executing the crime. Panic ensued in the surrounding neighborhoods due to the gunfire. Party workers and local residents rushed a severely bleeding Purnekar to the Infinity Hospital near R Mall on Ghodbunder Road. Despite immediate medical attention, he succumbed to his injuries during treatment due to excessive blood loss and critical internal trauma.
Motive and Investigation Underway
News of the assassination brought a large number of Shiv Sena (UBT) workers and local leaders rushing to the hospital and the crime scene. Party members expressed deep outrage and demanded the immediate arrest of the culprits. Police officials stated that multiple angles are currently being probed, including political rivalry, local disputes, and personal enmity.
Sources indicate that Purnekar was planning a public protest regarding civic issues concerning local residents. Although authorities denied permission for the protest, he had expressed his displeasure on social media. Police are investigating whether this agitation or past local friction had any direct link to the fatal assault. Forensic teams have collected vital evidence from the scene, and investigators are reviewing CCTV footage from nearby streets to trace the escape route of the attackers.
Tightened Security Amid Tensions
In the wake of the political murder, security has been drastically reinforced across Thane's Manpada and neighboring localities. A heavy deployment of police personnel remains stationed to maintain law and order and prevent any untoward escalation. Out of caution, some local shops and schools remained shut to avert potential disturbances. Police have also set up checkpoints ('nakabandi') at major exit points across the city to thoroughly check vehicles.
