Stock Market Crash: Sensex Tumbles Over 1100 Points, Investors Lose Rs 8 Lakh Crore Due to 5 Key Reasons

Indian Stock Markets Witness Massive Sell-Off

The beginning of the trading week proved to be deeply concerning for investors in the Indian stock market. As trading commenced, heavy selling pressure swept through the floors, wiping out a massive portion of investor wealth within minutes. Market analysts point out that mounting global uncertainties have taken a heavy toll on domestic equities.

At the closing bell, the benchmark BSE Sensex crashed by 1,124.02 points to settle at 72,771.72. Meanwhile, the NSE Nifty plummeted by 360.25 points to end the session around the 22,780.25 mark. This steep correction resulted in an estimated loss of nearly Rs 8 lakh crore for investors in a single day. Fear has gripped the market, prompting both retail and institutional participants to exercise extreme caution.

Escalating US-Iran Tensions and the Strait of Hormuz Crisis

The primary catalyst behind this sharp market downturn is the intensifying geopolitical friction in the Middle East. Uncertainty surrounding the Strait of Hormuz and strained relations between Washington and Tehran have unnerved global investors. US President Donald Trump left open the possibility of fresh military strikes against Iran ahead of upcoming congressional midterm elections, further fueling market anxiety.

Furthermore, Trump dismissed Iran's proposal for a seven-day ceasefire and reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. This standoff raises fears of a prolonged conflict in the region, which could severely disrupt global energy supplies and rattle international financial markets.

Surging Crude Oil Prices and Economic Pressures

The geopolitical turmoil directly impacted global crude oil markets. Brent crude prices surged by nearly 2 percent to trade around $107 per barrel, while WTI crude hovered near $94 per barrel. For major oil-importing economies like India, surging crude prices pose a major threat to inflation, fiscal deficit, and corporate profit margins.

Spike in US Bond Yields and Foreign Fund Outflows

Adding to domestic woes, the US 10-year Treasury yield climbed above 5.2 percent, marking its highest level since 2004. Rising bond yields make safe-haven fixed-income assets more attractive to global institutional investors, triggering capital outflows from emerging markets like India. Foreign Portfolio Investors (FPIs) turned net sellers in September, intensifying the downward pressure on Indian indices.

Weakening Rupee and Outlook for Investors

The Indian rupee also depreciated against the US dollar, trading past 95.89 in early sessions. Analysts advise investors to avoid panic selling and focus on fundamentally strong stocks with a long-term perspective while monitoring global developments closely.
