Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has sparked a massive political controversy with his recent remarks inside the state assembly. Questioning the conditions tied to the restoration of full statehood, Abdullah remarked that if the return of statehood depends entirely on the complete eradication of terrorism, then the final decision will not be made in New Delhi, but rather in Islamabad, Pakistan.
Clarifying the Stance on Statehood Resolution
Addressing the legislative assembly, the Chief Minister clarified that the official resolution brought forward by his administration does not contain any mention of restoring Article 370 or the region's previous special status. Despite this clarity, he noted that certain members of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) successfully misled a few legislators into proposing amendments aimed at incorporating those contentious issues into the statehood resolution.
Abdullah urged all members of the House not to fall for such amendments, which could be weaponized by political opponents to stall the entire process of regaining full statehood. He emphasized that statehood is a fundamental requirement for the welfare and empowerment of the local population, and administrative hurdles should not be allowed to jeopardize the democratic rights of citizens.
The Cross-Border Security Dilemma
In a sharp and sarcastic critique regarding security parameters, the Chief Minister underscored the absurdity of linking internal democratic governance indefinitely to external security threats.

Expressing dismay, the Chief Minister questioned under whose instructions the law secretary, acting on directives from the chief secretary, openly opposed a resolution brought forward by the elected head of the government.
