The Sudden Spike in Kitchen Budgets
Onions are an indispensable part of Indian cuisine, making price hikes a matter of immediate concern for households across the country. Over the past few weeks, surging onion prices have heavily impacted the common man's budget.
According to recent data released by the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, wholesale onion prices have witnessed a massive jump. While prices hovered around 3,299.85 rupees per क्विंटल a year ago, they crossed 4,615 rupees recently, marking an annual increase of nearly 135 percent.
Why Do Prices Peak in September and October?
The primary reason for the steep rise during these specific months lies in the agricultural crop cycle. Rabi crop harvested in March and April must sustain the market until the next Kharif crop arrives. By September and October, the old stock is nearly depleted, creating a supply deficit before fresh crops enter the market.
Additionally, unseasonal rains and extreme heat in key producing states like Maharashtra have damaged crops, while storage losses in government warehouses have further strained market supplies.
