Debate on Muslim Women's Education and Employment
A significant panel discussion and seminar focusing on the rights of Muslim women regarding education and employment was recently organized by 'Tehreek-e-Niswaan' in Phulwari Sharif, Patna. The event witnessed large participation from women, intellectuals, and social activists who gathered to discuss the deep-rooted socio-economic and political challenges faced by minority women in modern times.
Speakers at the event highlighted that while the Indian Constitution guarantees equality and prohibits discrimination on grounds of caste, religion, sex, or place of birth, the ground reality often tells a different story. In recent years, marginalized communities, particularly young girls from minority backgrounds, have faced mounting obstacles in accessing quality education and securing respectable livelihoods.
Concerns Over Communal Politics and Fear
Expressing grave concern over the current socio-political climate, speakers noted that prevailing communal politics is fostering an environment of fear. This atmosphere disproportionately affects women, discouraging them from stepping out of their homes, pursuing higher education, and becoming financially independent. Furthermore, administrative decisions such as school mergers and closures have accelerated the dropout rates among young girls.
Dr. Farhat Bano, National Convener of Tehreek-e-Niswaan, addressed the gathering and emphasized that systematic attempts to deprive women of their fundamental rights must be met with collective democratic resistance.
Historical Legacy of Women's Education
The seminar also revisited the historic struggles of pioneers like Fatima Sheikh and Savitribai Phule, who laid the foundation of women's education in India against heavy odds. Meina Tiwari, National General Secretary of AIPWA, recalled how historical figures in Bihar, including Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain, worked tirelessly for female literacy despite immense societal pressure.
Condemnation of Action Against Women Journalists
The participants strongly condemned the recent harassment and arrests of female journalists and activists across different parts of the country, including cases involving Shaheen Khan, Nafisa Khan, Saba Afreen, and Huda Jariwala. Speakers alleged that these women were targeted and subjected to harassment primarily due to their Muslim identity.
The seminar concluded with a collective resolve to intensify grassroots campaigns aimed at empowering minority women through education, legal awareness, and socio-economic support.
