Opposition Intensifies Protest at Rajghat Against Chief Election Commissioner
The political landscape in the national capital witnessed heightened tensions as the opposition's ongoing protest against the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) reached Rajghat on the third consecutive day. Senior Congress leaders, including Lok Sabha MP Rahul Gandhi and General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, joined party workers and alliance members at Mahatma Gandhi's memorial to stage a vociferous demonstration.
Heavy security deployments and barricades marked the perimeter of Rajghat from early morning, with security personnel deployed in large numbers to manage the crowds. Despite strict restrictions and attempts by local authorities to curb large gatherings, opposition leaders remained defiant, raising slogans against the central government and the administration's handling of democratic dissent.
Allegations of Suppressing Democratic Rights in Delhi
Addressing the media and supporters at the site, prominent opposition leaders launched a scathing attack on the ruling establishment. They alleged that the administration is systematically denying permission for peaceful protests across Delhi, effectively clamping down on basic democratic rights and freedom of expression.
According to the protesting leaders, every avenue for dialogue has been stonewalled, leaving them with no option but to take to the streets. The heavy police presence led to minor standoffs, but leaders urged participants to maintain discipline while pressing forward with their agenda to safeguard constitutional bodies.
Questions Raised Over Institutional Neutrality
The core grievance driving the protest centers on the alleged lack of neutrality and transparency within the Election Commission. Opposition parties have repeatedly claimed that independent constitutional institutions are being pressured to act in favor of the ruling dispensation, casting doubts on electoral fairness.
Political analysts suggest this confrontation could set the tone for upcoming legislative battles and nationwide campaigns, as opposition parties seek to consolidate their narrative around the protection of democratic norms and institutional integrity.
