The political landscape in Tamil Nadu is heating up as the Election Commission gears up for crucial assembly by-elections in two reserved constituencies. The polling is scheduled for October 6, with the counting of votes set to take place on October 9. This election holds immense significance as it marks the maiden electoral test for Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay-led TVK government, which came to power following the April 23 assembly polls.
Why are the Bypolls Happening?
The by-elections were necessitated due to the resignation of sitting legislators. The Madurantakam (SC) seat fell vacant following the resignation of Maragatham Kumaravel, while the Dharapuram (SC) seat became vacant after the resignation of P Sathyabama. Following a rigorous scrutiny process, the Election Commission accepted the nominations of 58 candidates across both constituencies, setting the stage for a competitive electoral battle.
TVK Fields Turncoat Candidates
In a strategic move, Chief Minister Vijay has fielded former AIADMK MLAs K Maragatham Kumaravel in Madurantakam and P Sathyabama in Dharapuram on TVK tickets. Both leaders had won their respective seats on AIADMK tickets in the April assembly elections before stepping down as legislators to join the ruling TVK. Their political futures will now be decided by the very voters who elected them earlier this year.
An Intense Five-Cornered Contest
The bypolls are witnessing a fierce multi-cornered fight. The opposition DMK has nominated I Paranthaman for Madurantakam and S Suganya for Dharapuram. Meanwhile, the AIADMK-led NDA has announced an all-women lineup, fielding Kanitha Sampath and K Bhanumathi. Adding further twist to the race, the Left parties (CPI and CPI-M) have decided to contest independently, breaking away from traditional alliances and making the electoral contest even more unpredictable.
