Punjab Government Announces Major DA Hike Before Diwali
In a much-needed relief ahead of the festive season, the Punjab government has announced an 8 percent increase in the Dearness Allowance (DA) for nearly eight lakh government employees and pensioners. The decision, announced by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, is set to bring substantial financial cheer to lakhs of households across the state.
According to the state administration, the revised DA will be effective from October 1, ensuring that employees receive the enhanced payout in their upcoming salary cycles. The announcement comes as a major morale booster during the festive period, and various employee unions have welcomed the proactive step taken by the government.
Successful Negotiations Following Employee Unrest
The breakthrough came after a series of high-level meetings between Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, cabinet ministers, top bureaucrats, and representatives of various employee and pensioner associations. The talks successfully resolved a prolonged deadlock that had seen thousands of government employees resort to mass casual leave in late August to press for their long-pending demands, including an 18 percent pending DA.
Gurnam Singh Virk, President of the Punjab State Ministerial Services Union, confirmed the development after the meeting, stating that the government has also assured them of constructive dialogues on other pending issues in due course of time.

Special Consideration for Women Employees
In addition to the financial hike, the Punjab government introduced a progressive administrative measure for women employees. Chief Minister Mann announced that female employees would henceforth be posted within a 40-kilometer radius of their homes, striking a better balance between their professional duties and family responsibilities.
The government also committed to holding mandatory monthly meetings with employee representatives to address workplace grievances promptly, reflecting a collaborative approach to governance and administration in the state.
