The Indian government on Thursday strongly responded to American billionaire Elon Musk's recent allegations, dismissing claims that Starlink's satellite communication (Satcom) services are being blocked in the country. The government made it clear that a uniform, transparent, and non-discriminatory regulatory framework exists for all telecom service providers in India.
Musk's Claims and the Government's Rebuttal
Earlier, Musk had alleged on social media that certain powerful business groups ('oligarchs') in India were attempting to maintain their monopoly by halting his satellite internet company's entry into the market. Addressing these concerns, the Ministry of Telecommunications issued a statement calling the allegations baseless and founded on misconceptions about India's regulatory fairness.
The ministry reiterated that the authorization framework for all telecommunications and satellite communication services applies equally and fairly to every eligible entity without any bias.
Mandatory Security Compliance for All Licensees
Currently, the Indian government has granted licenses to three satellite communication companies to operate in the country: Elon Musk's Starlink, Jio Satcom, and Eutelsat OneWeb. However, all these entities must acquire necessary spectrum allocations and rigorous security approvals before rolling out commercial services.
According to the ministry, every Satcom licensee must comply with stringent security guidelines to ensure user data protection and national security parameters are met. The security vetting process for all three licensees is currently underway.
