Major Changes in LPG Subsidy Rules from October 1
Crucial news has emerged for millions of domestic LPG consumers across the country. If you use cooking gas cylinders at home and benefit from government LPG subsidies, this update is vital for you. The central government has clarified that starting October 1, 2026, Aadhaar-based identity verification will be mandatory to receive LPG cylinders at subsidized rates. The primary objective of this new rule is to ensure that government subsidies reach only genuine and eligible consumers transparently.
Put simply, the government wants to ensure that the person in whose name the LPG connection is registered is the actual user getting the benefit. Consumers who had not yet verified their identity via Aadhaar were given extended deadlines earlier, but the final rule comes into effect on October 1, 2026.
If you haven't completed this verification yet, you should do so immediately to avoid paying market prices for your refills. However, consumers whose identity has already been verified do not need to repeat the process.
Why is Aadhaar Authentication Necessary?
There is no need for consumers to panic upon hearing 'biometric Aadhaar authentication'. It simply means confirming your identity securely through your Aadhaar number to ensure that economic benefits of LPG connections reach the intended households directly without leakages.
According to government data, by September 19, 2026, around 27.43 crore active domestic LPG consumers had successfully completed their Aadhaar-based biometric identification, accounting for roughly 89.9% of total active users.
Will Your LPG Supply Stop Without Verification?
This is the most critical question. No, the LPG supply will not be completely cut off. However, failure to complete Aadhaar verification may result in losing out on the subsidized rate, requiring you to purchase cylinders at market prices.
The government and oil companies have provided multiple easy ways for users to complete this process from home, including during cylinder delivery, visiting local gas showrooms, or using official mobile applications provided by oil marketing companies.
