The Catalyst Behind the Unrest at Lovely Professional University
The sprawling campus of Lovely Professional University (LPU) in Phagwara, Punjab, has recently turned into a focal point of nationwide attention due to a violent outbreak and subsequent large-scale vandalism. What started as a wave of student agitation quickly snowballed into chaotic violence, forcing law enforcement agencies and university authorities to step in with heavy security measures to restore order.
According to investigative reports, the entire controversy was triggered by a misleading social media post circulated on Reddit. The post falsely claimed that a female student had been assaulted by a male worker inside the Girls Hostel-3 (GH-3) and accused the administration of sweeping the matter under the rug. This incendiary claim enraged a large section of the student body. However, the post was soon deleted, and both police and university officials confirmed that the allegations were completely fabricated with zero factual backing.
Allegations Against Influencer Mohammad Farhat and Video Evidence
Amidst the chaos, Mohammad Farhat, a social media influencer and former student of the university, came under heavy scrutiny. A student named Ramya Mishra released a video online accusing Farhat of deliberately orchestrating and inciting the violence. According to the student, Farhat entered the Division of Student Welfare (DSW) office and signaled outsiders to enter and vandalize the premises, causing severe damage to university property.
In his defense, Farhat took to Instagram to deny all allegations, claiming he was merely trying to calm the aggressive crowd and steer them away from destruction. He stated that he is being unfairly targeted based on out-of-context video clips and expressed concerns for his safety. The university has initiated a formal review of his academic records and his role during the unrest.
Multimillion Loot and Entry of External Elements
The protests soon devolved into opportunistic violence as external miscreants from nearby areas infiltrated the campus. A local merchant operating a shop inside the university's UniMall reported that his store was looted, with criminals making off with numerous high-end laptops and around 118 iPhones.
The estimated financial loss from the store alone is pegged at nearly 14 crore rupees, as the stolen electronics were premium devices. Eyewitnesses and students noted that the utter breakdown of security allowed outsiders to exploit the situation, leading to widespread arson and theft across university commercial spaces.
Strict Action and Ongoing Investigations
In response to the unprecedented violence, the LPU administration formed a three-member disciplinary committee to sift through CCTV footage and identify the 30 to 40 students directly involved in the clashes. The police have registered formal cases and are utilizing advanced digital forensics to trace the origin of the fake social media post that sparked the crisis.
