NIA Conducts Raids and Arrests Imam in West Bengal
In a major counter-terrorism crackdown, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has arrested a mosque imam from the Mangalkot area of Purba Bardhaman district in West Bengal. The operation was launched early in the morning, targeting individuals suspected of having deep-rooted connections with extremist networks operating across borders.
The arrested cleric, identified as Piyar Molla Sheikh, served as the imam at a local mosque in Palishgram village. Following hours of intense questioning at the local police station, investigative officers formally placed him under arrest. Seized electronic devices, including mobile phones and diaries, are currently undergoing forensic examination to trace his digital footprint and communication channels.
Ties with the 'Imam Mahmudar Kafila' Syndicate
According to preliminary findings, the NIA suspects the detained imam of having active association with 'Imam Mahmudar Kafila' (IMK), a notorious offshoot of the banned terror group Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB). The syndicate has been under the scanner for radicalizing young minds and recruiting operatives across West Bengal, Assam, and other parts of eastern India.
Security analysts point out that border districts have historically remained vulnerable to clandestine cells attempting to establish underground modules. The central investigative agency is now meticulously examining financial transactions, recent foreign travel records, and potential sleeper cell connections to dismantle the entire network systematically.
