The Indian stock market witnessed a historic surge on Thursday, bringing smiles to investors' faces. The Sensex soared over 1500 points, closing at 74,315.61, while the Nifty 50 also gained a robust 374.65 points to reach 22,997.35, positioning itself very close to the psychological 23,000 mark. This tremendous rally led to an increase of approximately ₹66,000 crore in investors' total wealth in a single day. However, despite this stellar performance, midcap and smallcap shares saw a decline of more than one percent, resulting in many small investors' portfolios remaining in the red.
Key Factors Behind This Massive Market Rally
Several crucial factors contributed to Thursday's sharp rally in the stock market, including the strong performance of large-cap stocks and vigorous buying across major sectors.
- Robust Rally in Large-Cap Stocks: The primary driver of this market rally was the significant surge in the shares of large-cap companies. Reliance Industries' shares traded with a 4.03 percent gain at ₹1223 per share. Similarly, Tech Mahindra saw a 4.61 percent increase, ICICI Bank gained more than 4 percent, and other giants like Bharti Airtel, HCL Tech, HDFC Bank, TCS, and Kotak Mahindra Bank also rose by up to 3 percent. These stocks played a crucial role in pulling the indices upwards.
- Strong Sectoral Rally: After a long time, the Oil & Gas, Auto, Information Technology (IT), and Banking sectors witnessed such a splendid rally. All these sectors closed with gains ranging from 1 to 1.8 percent on Thursday, indicating a positive sentiment for the overall market.
- Moderation in Crude Oil Prices and Rupee Strength: A dip in international crude oil prices also proved to be a positive signal for the Indian market. After surpassing $105 per barrel, crude oil fell by 1.69 percent to around $104 per barrel. Alongside this, the strengthening of the rupee and a slight decline in US bond yields also attracted foreign investors towards the Indian market.
- Value Buying: Good buying activity was observed in some key and valuable stocks in the Indian share market, a phenomenon known as 'value buying'. Investors prioritized stocks whose prices seemed attractive and offered prospects of better future returns. This buying spree fueled a strong rally in the market.
Market Breadth and Investor Sentiment
On Thursday, a total of 4,591 shares were traded on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE). Of these, 1,657 shares advanced, while 2,741 shares declined, and 193 shares remained unchanged. This market snapshot reveals that even though Sensex and Nifty saw a bumper rally, this surge was largely confined to large-cap stocks. Mid and small-cap shares faced greater selling pressure. During this period, 126 shares were trading at their 52-week high, while 114 shares hit their 52-week low. Moreover, 39 shares hit the lower circuit, while no shares closed on the upper circuit, indicating a mixed picture of the market.
This rally has provided short-term relief to investors, but analysts believe that market volatility may continue given global economic conditions and upcoming election results. Investors are advised to invest judiciously.
