Flight 1073 of Flydubai was carrying 174 passengers and 8 crew members, including co-pilot Hammam Al Hamami, who harbored a sinister plan. Al Hamami was the only one aboard who knew that the flight was bound for a catastrophic end. His original plan involved eliminating Captain Smith Machar inside the cockpit before steering the aircraft into one of three pre-determined targets to avenge the suffering in Gaza.
Targets and Radical Background
According to reports from Israeli and international media, Al Hamami had planned to target either Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv, a high-rise building in Tel Aviv, or a US military base in Jordan. Interrogations by UAE authorities revealed that he acted alone and intended to die as a 'martyr'. His radical views had previously led Oman Air to ground him from flying, but he managed to secure a job at Flydubai earlier in 2025.
Heroism Aboard and Safe Landing
About two and a half hours into the flight, as the plane entered Jordanian airspace, Al Hamami attacked Captain Smith Machar with a crash axe. Displaying immense courage, Captain Machar managed to unlock the cockpit door, alerting the passengers. Fortunately, two off-duty pilots were traveling on the same flight; they quickly took control of the aircraft and safely landed it at Tabuk Airport in Saudi Arabia.
