In today's fast-paced digital era, children's mental well-being is increasingly under threat. A recent comprehensive health survey has raised serious concerns among experts and parents alike, revealing a sharp rise in mental health and neurodevelopmental disorders among minors, which are often brushed aside as mere mood swings or naughtiness.
Joint Survey by NIMHANS and Local Institutions
The National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS), Bengaluru, in collaboration with the Uttarakhand State Mental Health Authority and Government Doon Medical College, conducted a detailed survey. The report estimates that approximately 35,746 children aged 0 to 17 years in the state suffer from conditions like autism, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), anxiety, or depression. While these numbers are statistical projections based on population data, they underline a critical underlying health challenge.
The survey indicates that nearly 14,790 children and adolescents have neurodevelopmental issues, while 5,067 show signs of anxiety or depression, 2,445 have autism, and 1,075 are suspected to have ADHD.
Lack of Awareness Among Parents
One of the most alarming takeaways from the report is the profound lack of awareness among parents regarding pediatric mental health. While about 78.16% of respondents had heard of depression, a mere 12.15% were aware of proper neurodevelopmental issues, and only 5.40% knew about ADHD. Due to this lack of information, parents often fail to identify early symptoms, leading to severe delays in timely medical intervention.
Recognizing Behavioral Shifts in Children
Mental health experts emphasize that children can indeed suffer from psychological distress. Parents must remain vigilant and not dismiss persistent fear, deep sadness, declining academic performance, or lack of concentration as phases. Seeking professional help at the earliest sign of unusual behavioral changes can save a child from long-term emotional distress.
