A Major Political Twist in West Bengal: Tolly Queen Koyel Mallick Joins BJP Race

The political landscape of West Bengal is witnessing intense activity following a major strategic move by the Bharatiya Janata Party. Popular Bengali cinema actress Koyel Mallick, who recently made headlines by stepping down from her Rajya Sabha MP seat as a Trinamool Congress nominee, has now been officially named as the BJP's candidate for the upcoming Rajya Sabha by-election.

Affectionately known as the 'Tolly Queen' of the Bengali film industry, Mallick holds significant popularity among the masses. Political observers believe that her induction and subsequent nomination by the ruling national party is a calculated move to strengthen its cultural and political footprint in the state, directly challenging the Mamata Banerjee-led camp.

Understanding Koyel Mallick's Background and Political Journey

Born to veteran Bengali actor Ranjit Mallick and Deepa Mallick, Koyel comes from a deeply respected film family. Before entering the entertainment industry, she completed her formal education from Modern High School for Girls in Kolkata and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree with honors in psychology from Gokhale Memorial Girls College. She later established herself as a leading actress in Tollywood with numerous blockbuster films.

In 2013, she married producer Nispal Singh. Her transition from cinema to active politics earlier this year took many by surprise when Mamata Banerjee’s TMC nominated her for the upper house of Parliament. She officially took the oath as a Member of Parliament on April 6, marking her entry into the formal political arena.

The Brief Parliamentary Stint and Resignation

Mallick's tenure in the Rajya Sabha was notably brief. Without participating in a single parliamentary session, she tendered her resignation to Rajya Sabha Chairman C.P. Radhakrishnan on July 16. Her departure came in the wake of the TMC's disappointing performance in the West Bengal assembly elections and the subsequent exit of several key leaders from the party.

At the time of her resignation, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee publicly acknowledged that Mallick had informed the party leadership via email prior to submitting her formal papers. Banerjee noted that she respected Mallick as a talented artist and thanked her for meeting personally to complete the resignation process.

Upcoming By-Election and Strategic Implications

Following the vacancy created by her resignation, the Election Commission scheduled the Rajya Sabha by-election for October 16, coinciding with Maha Sasthi during the Durga Puja festival. The final date for filing nominations was set for October 6, with candidates permitted to withdraw until October 9.

By fielding Koyel Mallick for the exact same seat she vacated after leaving the TMC, the BJP has created a high-profile electoral contest. As political parties gear up for future challenges, this high-stakes contest continues to dominate headlines across the state, setting the stage for an intriguing electoral battle.
