A sudden fire broke out late Wednesday night on a commercial vessel anchored in Romanian waters within the Black Sea, triggering a rapid emergency response. Fortunately, all crew members were safely evacuated from the vessel following the incident. Authorities are currently investigating whether the fire was the result of a drone strike or a technical malfunction.
Escalating Maritime Risks Near NATO's Eastern Flank
Romanian officials noted that this latest incident significantly amplifies shipping risks in the Black Sea, particularly near NATO’s eastern flank. Since early October, at least five commercial vessels have been targeted near the coasts of NATO members Romania and Bulgaria, resulting in approximately 23 sailors either losing their lives or going missing.
These persistent security incidents underscore the growing dangers posed to commercial shipping lanes in the Black Sea due to spillover effects and drone attacks linked to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, transforming a vital trade route into a high-risk zone.
Investigation Underway on Tanker 'Yara J'
The Romanian Naval Authority reported receiving a distress signal regarding a fire on the Comoros-flagged chemical and oil tanker 'Yara J', after which the crew was swiftly rescued. Meanwhile, Defence Minister Radu Miruta stated, 'It is not yet clear whether the ship was attacked by a drone; the investigation is currently ongoing.'
This follows recent attacks near the Bulgarian coast, where Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev confirmed that an Ukraine-owned, Malta-flagged vessel named 'Chelsea 3' was targeted by three drone strikes roughly 18 nautical miles off the coast, leaving one vessel completely sunken and another severely damaged.
