Dehradun Voter Count Drops by Nearly 3 Lakhs After SIR Drive, Changing Political Equations in Uttarakhand

Special Intensive Revision Campaign Concludes in Uttarakhand

Following strict directives from the Election Commission of India, the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) campaign aimed at cleaning up electoral rolls in Uttarakhand has reached its final stage. This extensive administrative exercise has resulted in a significant shift in voter statistics across various districts in the hill state. In the capital district of Dehradun, a sharp decline in the number of registered voters has caught the attention of political strategists, forcing them to re-evaluate their grassroots preparations.

The campaign initiated in mid-2026 involved door-to-door enumeration forms distribution and rigorous verification processes. Following the publication of the draft electoral roll and subsequent resolution of claims and objections, the final voter lists have now been officially published. This entire procedure has notably impacted urban and semi-urban constituencies across the state.

Nearly Three Lakh Voters Removed in Dehradun District

Dehradun, being one of the most politically crucial districts in Uttarakhand, witnessed the most substantial impact of the SIR drive. Comparing the figures from the previous assembly elections to the latest finalized rolls, the total number of registered voters in the district has decreased by approximately 2,96,970. This unexpected reduction has created ripples among political circles, as such a massive subtraction can directly alter traditional vote banks.

During the previous assembly elections, Dehradun's ten constituencies accounted for over 14.87 million voters, which has now dropped to approximately 11.9 million. This accounts for roughly a twenty percent difference. Analysts attribute this steep decline to the removal of deceased voters, shifting residences, and the elimination of duplicate entries.

Major Electoral Shifts in Urban Constituencies Like Dharmpur

A closer look at the constituency-wise data within Dehradun reveals that urban seats experienced the highest drop in voter numbers. Dharmpur recorded the most significant difference, with nearly 60,000 fewer voters compared to the previous electoral rolls. Similarly, Dehradun Cantonment, Rishikesh, and Raipur constituencies also witnessed a reduction of over 40,000 voters each.

Conversely, rural and semi-urban pockets like Vikasnagar and Chakrata recorded minimal changes in their voter counts. Political experts suggest that high tenant mobility and strict verification standards in urban areas contributed heavily to the higher deletion rates in these regions.

Statewide Voter Statistics and New Additions

Looking at the broader picture across Uttarakhand, the total count of registered voters settled at over 7.15 million following the completion of the SIR drive. While millions of ineligible or duplicate names were purged from the system, the administration also integrated newly eligible young citizens who attained the qualifying age into the final rolls.

According to election authorities, more than 1.29 million new voters were successfully added during the claims and objections phase, while over one million ineligible entries were formally struck off. These stringent checks ensure that the democratic process remains transparent and precise.
