In a major crackdown against illegal smuggling syndicates, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has intercepted a passenger and seized a massive haul of gold worth approximately Rs 2.25 crore. The operation highlighted the evolving yet risky tactics adopted by smugglers to bypass security checkpoints at major airports.
Intelligence-Led Operation Leads to Arrest
Acting on specific intelligence inputs regarding an active smuggling racket, DRI officials mounted strict surveillance at the airport. According to the intelligence gathered, gold smuggled from abroad was scheduled to be handed over to a domestic passenger to avoid strict international checks.
The targeted passenger arrived on a flight from Tiruchirappalli. Upon thorough inspection of his baggage by the interception team, officers discovered gold biscuits cleverly concealed beneath layers of clothes. The seized gold weighed 1.481 kilograms and is valued at roughly Rs 2.25 crore in the market.
Busting the Deeper Nexus
Following the recovery, the DRI formally arrested the passenger and initiated comprehensive legal proceedings. Investigators are now probing the source of the smuggled gold and trying to identify the masterminds operating the international-to-domestic handover pipeline.
Authorities suspect that a wider organized network is operating behind the scenes, potentially exploiting domestic transit loopholes. Further interrogation of the accused is underway to track down all accomplices linked to this multi-crore smuggling syndicate.
